How do I Know if I Need Mold Inspection?

By Robert

I received an email from one of my readers the other day asking me how he should know when a mold inspection is necessary or not and I immediately decided that I should write a post concerning the importance of performing mold detection campaigns from time to time. Now, believe me guys, there are plenty of situations when you won’t even want to know that you have mold somewhere on the walls, ceilings or floors in your house or even somewhere hidden. That’s why I replied to my friend Jerry that a mold inspection should be done regularly, at least several times a year (each season is fine), in order to prevent something bad from happening to your house; and when I say “something bad” I usually refer to a huge and terrible mold infestation that would directly affect you and your family. We talked about what should one do when running a detection in this post: “How to inspect your house for mold” and if you are looking for real simple yet efficient reasons to start searching around your house and basement for signs of mold you have four interesting points listed there and I guess that there is much more information that you might even be interested in. You don’t have to know that you need an inspection, you would simply feel it, because as mentioned in the post that I just referred to, it smells so bad that you can’t stand it!

While running mold prevention campaigns is one the best things that you can do in order to avoid directly dealing with mold, there are cases when even after you did it, the chances of mold to appear are still high. Do you live in a place where there was a powerful tornado recently? Have you just moved to a place with plenty of recent rainstorms? Are you sure that there is no pipe leakage going on somewhere in your house? Anyways, I think that the main idea is clear here. You should be attentively looking for all possible water damage reasons around your house. Mold is in a direct relationship with water that causes moisture and increases the level of humidity around yours house. That’s why, whenever you feel that something is not alright with your house you should check it for mold and any other type of moisture related fungi infestations. Mold dies in dry places, in spots where the temperature is above normal and there is no humidity. While the temperature doesn’t always play a major role in the appearance of mold, it can sometimes be an indicator. When combined, a high level of moisture plus a few degrees of temperature can produce a very specific green type of fungi (mold) that is very hard to remove.

Mold inspection is something that needs to be performed regularly. When someone asks about the things that could require something like this to be done I don’t really get the logic. See, if perform an inspection for mold inside your house and you discover that there is mold indeed breeding and growing somewhere in places with high humidity – well this is a direct reason to believe that you need to run a mold removal campaign on your own or hire any water damage or mold elimination specialists that could take care of the problem. Sometimes it is just a matter of time to realize such things and I believe that you should educate yourself better when it comes to mold, how to detect and remove it. The very first thing that comes into my head when I hear such questions is that the individual never had the chance to deal with a real mold infestation in his life. While this is not a problem at all, sometimes it can be enough to realize that my posts written here on this blog are quite informative especially for those people that are trying to find out something more about these fungi. Now let’s get back to what is really important here. Running a mold inspection is required in that particular case when you recently had to deal with a serious water leakage or any flood. Don’t wait a long time after it has happened. Act fast, mold growths fast too!

I think that you guys need a mold inspection to be performed periodically. You need to improve your experience and run do it yourself mold inspection campaigns from time to time. If something smells bad inside your house and it is some kind of moisture-earthy like smell than it is more than probably that you are dealing with mold. Never let it grow to those quantities that you won’t be able to remove it on your own. Black mold removal can be extremely pricey if you don’t run your detection in time and realize what you are really dealing with. Sometimes it might be necessary to call professionals, but you have to try to perform all the necessary work on your own, when possible. Smell, moisture, water, any leakages, a recent flood or a rain storm are the very first things that could tell you that you need to run a mold inspection as soon as possible. Don’t wait too long because several days can play a very crucial role and mean a lot when you are dealing with such issues. Getting rid of mold might not be that complicated if you managed to spot it in time and take the necessary measures.
